First workout since december, and it was a good one. We did 12x400 on the indoor track. The first 10 were about 76-78, the last two were supposed to be faster, and I did like 66 then 64, so it was a good finish. It was fun to run again with the group. I was surprised to find otu there is a race this Saturday at the indoor track, and there will be quite a bit of competition there, but I'm leaning towards not running, because I didn't get a lot of consistent mileage in over the break, and I think I might play pickleball with Stacy and go to the temple. I also don't want to run slower than I did a month ago, which might happen haha. There will be other opportunities.

Really tough but good workout today. Started with a mile repeat at 5k pace, (5:14) then did a two mile repeat, slowing down by about 15 seconds per mile, I ran a 11:05 (possible a bit faster, I forgot my watch and coach was distracted when I came across the line, so it took him a sec to give me the time haha) and I was really happy with that, took some good mental toughness that last mile. Then we did one more mile repeat, no goal time, all effort based, and I ran a 5:13. It was great. Maybe I should run without my watch more often, or just look at it less. I'm just proud of the mental tenacity during that workout.

What a workout! We did a 8 mile progression run, with a mile warmup tacked on the front and back end of it. It was a really tough run on the Murdock canal trail. Going out was fine, and there was really one one fastish mile, but once we turned around, man! There was a nice headwind, classic! Anyway, I didn't have my watch, and I just wanted to focus on the effort. I think, based on what other people's pace were that I ran with briefly or passed, that my pace varied between 5:55 and like 6:20 for the majority of the run. Biggest focus for me right now is the effort and mental toughness, to get ready for that 55k.

Wow! Really fun trail run with my boy Sam! We ran from the house down to Grove Creek canyon, and ran up that. It was a GORGEOUS run, such good scenery and a really good trail. I found out that it loops around down to battle creek, so I'm going to make sure to do that loop sometime! It was super muddy coming back, but it was just great. Ultramarathon number 2!! This race was honestly harder than I thought it would be, but I loved it just the same. The course was set up where it had kind of this central aide station, and then loops that would go out from it. I started out pretty conservative, and just kept a good pace throughout. The hardest parts of the race was the last loop, the red loop, which was the longest, at just over 10 miles. There was a long stretch of uphill, which was very tiring, but I did catch quite a few people on it. The very hardest part though was the last 6-7 miles from the aide station, along the outskirts of town and to the finish line. When I got to the aide station, my parents were there, and told me that there were two people ahead of me that I could probably catch. I was feeling pretty good mentally, knowing there was just a few miles left, and sped through the aid station and out after those people. I caught them both within about 1.5 miles, but from there, it was an absolute mental battle to the finish. The last few miles were along this ridge, and just a slow uphill in the heat. It seemed like the end would never come, but it did, and it felt so good to finish, and eat some bean and cheese quesadillas! I was truly surprised to find out I came in third place overall, so that was kinda fun to know. I think I have the potential to do better in the future! I was most proud though of Sam. He powered through that with sheer mental tenacity, and it was just epic to watch. What a freaking animal.

When with Garret Marsing, one of his steeplechase friends named Matt, and one of my homies from the farm team, Jared Murphy. We were just doing an adventure trail run loop down from house to grove creek, up that canyon, and I wanted to make my way around and up the saddle of big baldy and down dry creek canyon, but there was quite a bit of snow up there, and quite honestly, I don't think anyone was really prepared for an adventure run. I was the only one with a pack or water or food. I think Garret and Jared would have been game to push on, but Matt was not feeling it, morale was low so we cut the losses and came down earlier down battle creek. Still super fun. I've got to get that full loop in though, with some good adventure homies. Hopefully soon!

I met up with Joseph Moore, and we ran up Jacobs Ladder, almost to the summit of Lone Peak. There was too much snow to really safely summit. We were in snow for probably 5 miles of this run, and it was the worst kind of snow, where you could run on top of it for a little bit then out of nowhere you've collapsed and its knee deep, and you trip hard, cause the top layer is still hard. I don't know if that made sense, but it was the crusty kind of snow that just makes it hard to run, so you have to walk more. Anyway, took up about 4 hours, with about 5000 feet of climbing. It was awesome to see Joseph and catch up with him. He has such an awesome spirit of adventure. He's not in quite as good mountain running shape as we was when he lived in Utah, but he also hasn't been able to run mountains very much, so that totally makes sense. This took some studying of the maps and trusting my gut, but it wasn't too bad to figure out. I filled my bottle up partway at the top of grove creek from the beautiful spring there, and then blasted down that canyon. Overall, great run, really tough. I didn't bring quite enough water, but it was overcast at the end thankfully, and it took about 2.5 hours to do it, although that doesnt' count some of the times I stopped my watch to look around and pee and stuff.

Went out to confluence park, and apparently today is the day when the running center crew gets together to run. I ran with them, and Logan and we did a 4 mile tempo run, my first one in a long time. It was really good. The first mile was 6.15, and they each got faster until the last one was 5.37. The total time was 23.32, so I'm really happy with that effort.

I felt kinda weird and light headed at the beginning of the run, but got feeling better as we went along. Fun convo with coach about covid, masks, dating, running, and anything else that matters. Jk, it was just a nice relaxed run, with some peaceful, open spaces. I loved it. We also kept speeding up little by little over the last couple miles, and had a pretty strong finish. I really liked the loop, I'll be back.

What a great day for running. I ran a loop and a half around Navajo lake with John R. We had such a good conversation, love that dude, he seriously has been such a good friend to me over the years, and is largely responsible for my love of ultra running. Some highlights include seeing a Bald Eagle, realizing the back half of the trail was too full of snow and fallen logs and bushwacking it down to the road, and talking about the Jazz and how much we love them.

Great, and very active day. Ran up Forsyth trail to Burger(?) peak, which round trip ended up being about 11.5 miles. Great climb, really fun descent while testing out my new running playlist. Only had one fall, with a shallow but sweet looking cut. I also noticed my heart felt a little weird coming down, maybe tired? idk, but it's something to keep an eye on for sure. Later, towards the evening I ran up and down Bear paw poppe. Swimming was inbetween, so I was just active for a long time, it was great. Training has been a lot better this year than last.

What a day! I thoroughly enjoyed this race, it was an early start (4am) which ended up being great because then we didn't get as roasted by the sun. It was still shady in Hobble creek when we got to it. My pack held up great, especially since this was my first trail run with it. I didn't bring a headlamp, so I relied on other runners for the first hour or so, which ended up working out fine, but I think I'll bring my own if we start that early another time. One of the people I ran with in the morning was a girl named Teresa, who was the winner of the Wasatch 100 last year, as well as several other ultramarathons. What a legend. I made friends with a Dermatologist named Jim McDonald, we ran together from miles 14-30 more or less, super awesome guy, just makes you feel super good about yourself. I hit the halfway point at about 4:16:00, which was ahead of my goal pace, I really wanted to get under 9. Turns out I really underestimated the back half of the course. There was steady climbing with some flat to downhill sections from about mile 24-39. That next mile and a half was basically straight up, I think it's called Bozung hill or something like that. It was wild, and just slow trudging forward. Kinda awesome now that I look back at it. The views back there were incredible! Needless to say, getting to the next aid station felt so good, and from there it was almost entirely downhill. It wasn't easy of course, finishing those long races never are. I was in 7th I think until the last aid station, some guy came blasting through, but I didn't really care, I was just happy to be drinking some water and eating grapes. I started cruising down the canyon road and a couple of things happened, Sam drove by with my whole family (minus Anna) in the car, and that was a big boost to morale!! Then, a little further down I heard some people cheering behind me, the first place girl was closing in. Somehow I found the energy to really kick it down the canyon, which I was proud of. Overall, the race was a fantastic experience, I want to come back and do it again and see if I can do even better.

Nice run around the Elderly Loop. THat's what I decided to call it, because it goes through a retirement community. Still listening to the Elon Musk book, a Tesla is now officially my dream car, and I'm also convinced people will be living on Mars before I die. haha, books are fun.

Did a nice trail run today on the trails behind midwestern and near the temple. The trails weren't particularly long, and not as isolated as those Utah mountain trails can be, but it was still fun to get off the roads. I also met another midwestern student from BYU who is into ultramarathons and that sort of stuff, so we could have some good times ahead!!

Nice run, with 6x2min fartleks, at or below 6 minute pace. I was going to do a longer farlek workout, but decided with this shorter one because I'm going to do a little 5k race this saturday. We'll see how that goes. I am excited though

Ran in the afternoon today, but the hot sauce from my lunch was not happy that I was running so soon after the meal, I kept feeling it in my throat haha. To be honest, I don't remember how far this run was, but it was somewhere over 4, but not that close to 5

Just another chill run. Happy to be done with school for the next 10 days or so, but still a lot of studying to do over this break!

Ran around on the trails by the temple again. It is always fun to get off the roads. Those trails are kinda crazy, especially on a saturday morning because I spend a lot of time dodging and jumping around the rocks, and then there are a bunch of people up there hiking that I have to look out for as well, so that keeps things exciting.

another test this morning, grateful I could get out on a run today. I was listening to my book, David vs Goliath, and it's just got some really interesting insights in there. I don't know why, but Malcom Gladwell is just one of my all time favorite people to listen to

Ran down to the park, and there was a BRUTAL headwind coming back. Wow. I knew there would be a headwind, and my goal was to the same time back as I did to the park, just for a little push. Turned into a pretty hard push for a mile, then I gave up on that goal. I think I should have stuck with it, and maybe just started a little slower, cause I only finished a minute off that time. Anyway, next time I guess.

Fun loop today through one of the nearby neighborhoods. Had a nice 1.5 mile push to try and catch up to this older guy on a bike. It made me realize how much I miss competition, and how much it can push me. I did catch the biker, and he said I was making him feel bad haha. I hope he was joking, cause just the fact that he was out there and doing something puts him ahead of most of his peers.

Decided to do 2xmile repeat workout this morning. 2 mile warm up, then ran a mile at 5:35, made a stop at the park to use the bathroom, ended up taking about 4 minute break between the two repeats, and then ran a 5:40 for the second one. It would have been nice to do the second one under 5:40, but that's ok. I'm not sure what to do with running right now. I'd love to train for something, but I'll be unavailable during the squaw peak 50 this year, and school starts at the end of July. I'm thinking maybe the speedgoat 50k could be a good option, but I'll have to see.

I wanted to mix things up today, so I drove to a different part of the river trail and started my run there. It wasn't like crazy different, cause a desert wash is a desert wash, but I did appreciate the change of scenery. Unfortunately, this is one of those runs where out of nowhere I had to make a little pit stop and hide in the bottom of the wash to poop. Super obnoxious, but better there than in my shorts I guess, lol.
